"A Father"

by Sylvia Negron 2013

He bears your weight

in strong, loving arms.

He watches over

and protects you from harm.

He looks ahead

and perceives your need,

then begins its fulfillment

by word and deed.

He guides and directs

and cherishes your health.

His worth is not determined

by his store of wealth.

He pushes you outside

your comfort zone

in an effort to ensure

you can walk on your own.

He sighs with nostalgia

and watches with pride

as you walk toward your future

with a confident stride.

You know that his deeds

will stand the test

and, as fathers go,

you have had the best.

Aldine Ingram

Was such a man.

His children were his pride.

The best in the land.

Arlene, Wyona,

Glenda and Shot,

Not a rotten apple

In the whole lot.

It couldn't get better,

He thought, but then,

Along came the grandchildren,

And it began again.

Ryan, Natalie, Katherine

And the cycle renewed,

another funny, frolicking,

Loving brood.

And as the earth turned,

In the process of time

Along came the great-grands;

They just blew his mind.

He experienced the joy

of another loving crew:

Seth, Hamby & Ingram ,

Madeline and SOPHIE TOO,

A perfect example of

Close family ties,

Love knitted together

The fabric of their lives.

When trouble came,

They just drew together

And waited out the storm

Until calmer weather

Through all the trials

He and Mable faced,

They saw them through

With love and grace.

Aldine was never boisterous,

never loud or crude,

Just gentle, courteous,

And never rude.

You know his patience

Had no end

To survive Emmett invasions

Almost every weekend.

Their home was a hub,

The very center of the clan.

He welcomed them all

With an open hand.

Kind words, gentle smiles,

Witty jokes from him or Mable,

with coffee, tea and cornbread

On the kitchen table.

Loved by all

Who came his way,

we celebrate Aldine's life

As we gather today.
