Obituary

Dennis Clarence Ward, 84, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2026, at his home in Jackson, Georgia. After several years of navigating health challenges, he spent his final moments in his favorite chair.

Early Life and Education

Born on July 23, 1941, Dennis was a native of Harrison, Maine, and the son of the late Norman Freedom Ward and Celia Witham Ward. He grew up as one of nine children in a bustling household alongside his sisters Norma, Bertha (Betty), Vivian, and Beverly, and his brothers Neil, Arthur, Richard, and Philip.

A standout athlete at Bridgton High School, Dennis excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. His passion for sports and competition would remain a defining trait throughout his entire life.

Military Service and Career

Following high school, Dennis enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1959 to 1963. It was during his station in London that he met Diana J. Ward (Niderost). The two married and eventually settled in Maine to raise their two sons, Steven and Jeffrey.

Dennis dedicated 30 years to the U.S. Postal Service, primarily working in Finance at the Portland, Maine office. His leadership was frequently called upon as he served as interim postmaster for several offices across the state. He also spent many years serving on the board of a local credit union.

Retirement and Hobbies

In retirement, Dennis enjoyed the best of both worlds, moving to Florida while maintaining a summer residence in his beloved Maine. He was a lifelong athlete and avid golfer, spending many years as a member at Riverside Golf Course in Portland, as well as a competitive racquetball player. In his later years, he found quiet joy in watching sports, reading, and mastering crossword puzzles.

He recently moved to the Atlanta area with his son Steven and daughter-in-law Donna. Dennis took great pride in his two sons, watching them establish their own successful careers and families.

Family and Legacy

Dennis was predeceased by his former wife, Diana (2023), and his eldest son, Steven A. Ward (2025).

Dennis is survived by his son, Jeffrey; daughter-in-law, Ellen Neri; and their children, Liam Ward, Katharine Baylis and Matthew Weikel; daughter-in-law, Donna Ward; and her children, Ryan and Cory; Steven's son, Aidan; as well as many nieces and nephews.
