Flanagan
September 8, 1919 – August 3, 2014
Mr. Dudley Dean Flanagan, age 94, of Barnesville passed away Sunday, August 3, 2014 in a Spalding County Healthcare Facility. Mr. Flanagan was born in Telfair County on September 8, 1919 as son of the late Mr. Sam D. Flanagan and the late Mrs. Willie M. Harbin Flanagan, and is also preceded in death his son, the late Charles D. Flanagan, by three brothers, George Flanagan, Edison Flanagan, & William Flanagan, and by three sisters, Beryl Flanagan, Mildred Underwood, & Myrtle Sandifer. Mr. Flanagan originated the local Chapter of the AARP (3136). He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, where he had been a Past President. Mr. Flanagan had served as an advisor to the local high school Key Club as STAR Student Chairman, and had once served as Chairman for the Council on Aging that covered a ten county area. He was a Past Commander of the American Legion, had served on the Board of Directors for the Department of Family and Children Services for 10 years, implemented the start-up of the Senior Citizens Building, and started the Lamar County Food Bank. Mr. Flanagan Retired from Robins Air Force Base after 30 years, served in the U.S. Army for 4 years, and was a Veteran of WWII. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and continued on the front lines until the end of the war. Mr. Flanagan served five months as Police Chief of a little town in Germany during his assignment to the Military Police. He also served in the U.S. Air National Guard. In the 1960's, he, along with his wife, owned and operated the Dairy Queen in Barnesville. Mr. Flanagan was a member of the Barnesville First Baptist Church, where he was a Life Deacon and Former Sunday School Teacher.
Mr. Flanagan is survived by: His wife – Frances Gravely Flanagan of Barnesville ; 2 Daughters – Jane Benton of Barnesville and Ann Waters of Newnan ; Brother – Eschol Flanagan of Macon ; Six Grandchildren ; 11 Great Grandchildren ; & 1 Great Great Grandson.
Funeral Services for Mr. Dudley Flanagan will be conducted Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at 11 O'Clock in the First Baptist Church of Barnesville. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Williams Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 from 5pm until 7pm.
