John Neil Porter, of Jackson, GA, died Saturday, December 18, 2010 at his residence. He was born on July 28, 1930 in Auraria, GA to Clayton and Kathleen Woodward Porter. He was a carpenter and built and remodeled numerous houses and buildings in the surrounding counties. He enjoyed gardening and landscaping and numerous home projects. Mr. Porter is survived by son, Kenneth F. Porter, of Jackson, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Jimmy Davis, of Dawsonville, GA; five grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren, one great-great-grandson; sister, Dola Grace Butler, of Dahlonega, GA; brother , Scott Porter, of Cartersville, GA; several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Shirley Louise Lawrance Porter, father, Clayton Porter, mother, Kathleen Woodward Porter, sons, John Clayton Porter and Michael Tyrone Porter. Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at Banister Funeral Home in with Rev. Lyman Caldwell officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Bannister Funeral Home Monday, December 20, 2010 from 10:00 AM – 9:00 PM. The family will receive friends at Sherrell Funeral Home on Sunday, December 19, 2010 from 12:00 - 2:00 PM. Mr. Porter will then be carried to Banister Funeral Home in Dahlonega, GA.
