Dr. Thomas Michael “Mike” Drake, age, 79 of Barnesville, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 2, 2026.
Mike was born on Friday, December 13, 1946, in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late David Lewis Drake and the late Kitty Withers Berry Drake. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Ann Priest.
Throughout his life, Mike was a caring son, husband, father and grandfather. He was deeply committed to his community and church.
A scholar and a gentleman, he challenged generations of students to think critically, pursue excellence, and never stop learning.
Mike was a teacher, coach and administrator at Montgomery Bell Academy of Nashville TN, Westfield School of Perry GA, Tattnall Square Academy of Macon GA, St George’s Episcopal Academy of Milner GA, Executive Director of the Georgia Independent School Association. He was one of the founders of High Meadows School and Camp in Roswell Ga, and a proud alumni of the University of Virginia.
Mike’s personal philosophy as a teacher was “Stamping Out Ignorance”. He enjoyed golf, playing handbells, gardening, Sunday school and visiting Europe. He was an avid student of history, especially Thomas Jefferson.
Mike is survived by his wife of almost 53 years, Mardi Drake; daughters and sons-in-law, Martha & Drew Marshall, Sandi & Jay St Pierre; grandchildren, Debi Marshall, Tricia Marshall, John Marshall, Marie St Pierre, Allie St Pierre, and Thomas St Pierre; brother and sister-in-law, David & Ann Drake; and nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service for Dr. Mike Drake will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 1 PM at Barnesville First United Methodist Church, with Pastor Ann Mann officiating. Friends may visit the family following the service. The service will also be live streamed on the Barnesville First United Methodist Church’s YouTube channel.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Barnesville First United Methodist Church (https://barnesvillefumc.org/) or to ALS of Georgia (https://alsgeorgia.org/donate) in memory of Dr. Mike Drake.
